Mount Uhud: Where History, Hadith, and Adventure Collide

To the north of Madinah, Mount Uhud, a historic peak in Saudi Arabia, reaches 3533 feet. The peak is well-known for hosting the second encounter between Muslims and pagan warriors.

The mountain continues to draw tourists and pilgrims from around the globe who come to experience its historical and spiritual significance.

Historical remnants can be seen on the mountain, including a sizable mosque in the valley. Along with these fascinating adventure sports, tourists can go hiking and rock climbing.

History of Mount Uhud

The mountain is well-known as the site of the pivotal battle of Uhud. The conflict preceded the conflict of Badr and was the second military encounter between Muslims and Meccans.

It occurred as the Meccans sought to avenge their failure in the Battle of Badr by launching an offensive against the army led by Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).

The overall outcome of the battle appeared to favour Muslims, but a critical miscalculation on the part of the Muslim army reversed the outcome of the war. Some Muslims in the army of Prophet Mohammad PBUH disobeyed him by abandoning their posts.

This, in turn, allowed Meccan archers from their cavalry to launch a surprise attack. Many people were killed in this surprise onslaught, including the Prophet's (PBUH) foster brother and uncle. The battle also injured Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Mount Uhud Revival

According to legend, while Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) was ascending Mount Uhud with Umar, Uthman, and Abu Bakar, the mountain ground rocked beneath them.

The Prophet PBUH then stomped his foot on the ground and exclaimed, "O Uhud! Be steadfast, for you have a Prophet, a truth supporter, and two martyrs on your side." As a result, the earthquake came to a halt nearly instantaneously.

Hadith of Mount Uhud

Because the Mount of Uhud is so close to Prophet Mohammad's (PBUH) heart, there are many hadiths on it. The most well-known is:

"Once upon a time, Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) said, 'This is Uhud, the mountain that loves

us and that we love.'"

This phrase conveys the Prophet's affection for the location and translates people's love for the mountain out of pure love for him.

When is the best time to visit?

Mount Uhud is a well-known ziyarat destination in Madinah, visited by the majority of Hajj and Umrah pilgrims. Because the location has a desert climate, winter is the best time to visit Mount Uhud. The months of November through March are the most popular for visitors.

How to Get There?

Mount Uhud is 13 kilometres from Madinah's city centre. It is also 10 kilometres north of Masjid An Nabawi. The mountain is well-served by highways and public transport. Tourists can also arrange private cabs for a more personalised mountain experience.
